Unity Through Water

Program: Multi-Religious Place of Worship

Location: Tanaf, Senegal

En Kairia Looro Competition 2017

Tanaf, Senegal is stricken with drought, non-drinkable water, and a severe lack of resources to obtain clean, hygienic water. With this taken into account, we see water as a ritualistic substance that should be treated with a deep and tender respect, as well as a vital, life or death resource for the people of Tanaf, and it must function as both. Our response to this situation is a sacred landmark and a series of dynamic, multi-use, multi-faith prayer spaces that revolve around a water collection system that doubles as a clean resource for the people of Tanaf. Our project employs the use of water as a divine, life-giving element, and provides flexible spaces, that bind Muslims, Christians, Animists, and the rest of the community, under one structure.
